Investment Gold Bullion
Investment gold at Heirloom Gold. Physical gold you can hold — authenticated bars and coins, securely stored and delivered, and chosen to qualify for the UK's most favourable tax treatment on precious metals.
Why investment gold?
Gold has held its purchasing power across centuries, currencies, and crises. It sits outside the financial system, carries no counterparty risk, and remains one of the few assets you can physically own and pass on. For UK buyers, the tax treatment makes a meaningful difference to long-term returns.
VAT-free under HMRC rules
Investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK. The exemption is set out in the Value Added Tax Act 1994 and explained in HMRC Notice 701/21. To qualify as investment gold, a piece must meet specific criteria:
- Bars and wafers must be of a fineness of not less than 995 thousandths (99.5% pure or higher) and of a weight accepted by the bullion markets.
- Coins must have a fineness of at least 900 thousandths, have been minted after 1800, are or have been legal tender in their country of origin, and customarily sell at a price not exceeding 180% of the open market value of the gold they contain.
Every piece in our investment gold range is selected to meet these standards. The price you see is the price you pay — no VAT added at checkout.
CGT-free for UK legal tender coins
UK legal tender gold coins — including Sovereigns, Britannias, the Royal Mint Lunar Series, Queen's Beasts and Tudor Beasts — are also exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents, regardless of how much the gold price moves between purchase and sale. For longer-term holdings or larger positions, this combination of VAT-free purchase and CGT-free disposal is what makes UK coins a particularly efficient way to own gold.

Gold bars to order
If you don't see the exact bar weight, refiner, or coin year you're after, we can source it for you. We work with LBMA-accredited refiners and trusted bullion dealers to obtain specific pieces — from 1g and 5g bars through to 100g, 250g, 500g and 1kg formats — usually within five to seven working days. Please get in touch with your requirement and we'll come back with availability and a confirmed price.
Buy with confidence
Heirloom Gold is operated by experienced jewellers with decades of trade in precious metals. Every bar and coin we sell is authenticated, weighed, and verified before it leaves us. We provide a full invoice with each purchase showing fineness, weight, and where applicable the bar serial number — the documentation you'll want for your records and for any future sale.
