London 1973! Vintage 9ct Gold Opening House Charm
At first glance, the charm takes the form of a charming traditional cottage or country house. The exterior has been carefully modelled with a pitched tiled roof, chimney stacks, timber-style detailing and tiny pierced windows. Measuring approximately 24.2mm in length and 11mm in height, it is remarkably detailed for something so wonderfully miniature.
The real surprise comes when the house is opened. The charm separates on a hinge to reveal a miniature interior scene, with one half forming the inside of the house and the other opening out beneath it. Tiny pieces of furniture can be seen within, including what appears to be an armchair or fireside chair inside the cottage, while the opening section is decorated with further miniature household details.
There is wonderful texture throughout, from the roof tiles and horizontal lines of the cottage walls to the tiny window frames and interior decoration. The fact that so much thought has gone into areas that remain completely hidden when the charm is closed is precisely what makes these vintage novelty pieces so special.
The charm weighs 3.8 grams and was hallmarked in London in 1973, together with the Makers Mark L&O. It is fitted with a gold suspension ring, allowing it to be added to a traditional charm bracelet or worn from a chain as a wonderfully unusual pendant.
