London 1972! Vintage 9ct Gold Scarecrow Charm

The scarecrow has been modelled with a wonderfully textured, almost straw-like finish to his clothing, complete with stitched patches, a ragged hem, necktie and individually formed hands. His characterful face sits beneath an oversized hat, while his arms stretch out to either side in classic scarecrow fashion. Even the back has been carefully finished rather than left plain, making him interesting from every angle. With his outstretched arms, battered hat, patched clothing and wonderfully cheerful expression, this little fellow is one of those vintage charms that immediately makes you smile.

The charm weighs 2.4 grams and measures approximately 27.4mm in height and 20.2mm across his outstretched arms. It has a substantial three-dimensional appearance for its size and retains all the quirky detailing that makes vintage figural charms so collectible. It carries a full British hallmark dating the piece to 1972, together with the S&K Makers Mark for Slade & Kempton of Benjamin Street, London EC1.

Scarecrow jewellery is much less commonly encountered than traditional hearts, animals and lucky symbols, making this a particularly fun addition to a collection of vintage gold charms. The scarecrow has long been associated with the countryside, harvest time and rural life.
