Edwardian 18ct Gold Garnet & Diamond Ring, Birmingham 1906
The broad, oval-shaped front features a beautiful deep reddish-brown garnet at its centre, held within a striking star-shaped setting. Two small diamonds sit on either side, each nestled within its own decorative star-shaped recess. The contrast between the richly coloured central gemstone, the subtle sparkle of the diamonds and the warmth of the yellow gold gives the ring a particularly attractive appearance.
The goldwork is just as appealing as the gemstones themselves. The substantial front has a softly polished finish, with raised, angular detailing on either side that flows into the shoulders before tapering into a slimmer band. This combination of a bold central design and carefully shaped gold gives the ring a wonderful presence on the finger without feeling excessively heavy.
The ring weighs 1.9 grams and carries British hallmarks for Birmingham 1906, placing it firmly within the Edwardian period. A Makers Mark is also present, although the first letter has become worn or obscured, making it difficult to identify the original manufacturer with certainty.
Currently a Size N, this is a particularly charming antique ring for anyone who appreciates unusual gemstone settings and the individuality of old jewellery. Its striking star motif, beautiful colour combination and surviving period hallmarks make it a lovely piece of Edwardian history to wear and enjoy today.
