Birmingham 1971! 9ct Yellow Gold Needle In A Haystack Charm

At first glance, the charm resembles a tiny rectangular bundle but if you look more closely, the wonderfully textured surface appears to represent a miniature stack or bale of hay. Even better, the charm is hinged and opens, revealing a concealed hollow compartment inside representing a playful interpretation of the familiar expression “finding a needle in a haystack.”

The exterior has been intricately worked with a crosshatched and linear texture to imitate tightly packed strands of hay, with further detailing around the edges giving this tiny piece a surprising amount of character. Measuring only approximately 15mm by 15mm, the craftsmanship is particularly impressive when viewed up close.

There appears to be a small, raised detail to the interior of the opening section which may form part of the charm's original ‘needle’ detail. As we cannot be completely certain of its intended construction, we prefer not to overstate this, but the combination of the haystack-like exterior and secret opening makes the ‘Needle in a Haystack’ interpretation particularly convincing.

Despite its petite dimensions, this is a surprisingly substantial charm, weighing an impressive 5 grams of 9ct Yellow Gold. It feels beautifully solid in the hand and has the satisfying weight and quality associated with better vintage gold charms. The charm carries British hallmarks for Birmingham 1971, placing it firmly within the wonderfully inventive period of British novelty charm making during the 1960s and 1970s. A Makers Mark is also present, although unfortunately it is not sufficiently clear for us to confidently attribute the piece to a particular maker.
