Birmingham 1969! Vintage 9ct Gold Retractable Toothpick Pendant
The cylindrical case is finished with an attractive engine-turned textured pattern, giving it a refined appearance while providing a secure grip. Hidden neatly within is a slender, polished gold toothpick that extends smoothly from the case when required before retracting safely back inside, protecting the point when not in use. Whether originally carried on an Albert chain, watch chain or pendant chain, it remains an intriguing conversation piece and an excellent example of functional luxury.
This piece measures 2 inches including the jump ring when closed and extends to approximately 3 inches when the toothpick is fully deployed. Weighing a substantial 6 grams, it has a reassuring quality feel and can still be worn as a distinctive pendant or added to a collection of antique and vintage gold accessories.
This pendant was fully hallmarked for 9ct Gold in Birmingham during 1969 and bears the Makers Mark C & C for Cohen & Charles, the partnership of Albert Cohen and Charles Solomon, who traded from Thavies Inn, Holborn Circus in London. The firm was well known for producing quality gold novelties, accessories and small luxury items during the mid-20th Century, with their work admired for its excellent engineering and craftsmanship.
Novelty gold accessories have become increasingly sought after by collectors due to their originality and the fact that relatively few have survived and are still in working order.
