Antique 18ct Yellow Gold Floral Buckle Ring, Chester 1908

The ring has been crafted in solid 18ct Yellow Gold that weighs 4.2 grams and measures approximately 5.7mm in width. Its band is beautifully decorated with an intricate repeating floral pattern, with individual flower heads surrounded by scrolling detail. Sitting proudly across the front is the traditional buckle and pin motif which creates a lovely three-dimensional finish against the engraved band.

Buckle rings became particularly fashionable during the Victorian era and remained popular into the early 20th Century. The buckle itself was traditionally associated with loyalty, strength and an enduring bond, giving these rings a little more meaning beyond their decorative appeal.

One of the nicest details of this particular example is its provenance. The inside of the band carries a full set of British hallmarks for 18ct Gold, Chester, 1908, alongside the Makers Mark for Edward Vaughton. Vaughton was a Birmingham Jewellery Manufacturer, and the surviving Makers Mark adds another interesting piece of history to an already characterful antique ring.

Currently a UK Size Q, this is a gorgeous piece with plenty of detail and a beautifully distinctive look on the hand. The combination of the floral engraving, buckle motif and clear period hallmarks makes it a particularly charming piece for anyone who loves genuine antique jewellery.
